If JP had died of an insulin overdose would you be building this site to ban insulin? Not likely since most people are helped by insulin and it IS a needed drug for those it does help - my point is, that methadone did take your brother and that is horrible and I am so sorry for your loss, but methadone also SAVES LIVES. There are so many drugs out there that people die from everyday - both narcotic as well as non-narcotic drugs alike. Banning a drug doesn't help anything, trying to figure out why people OD or why people are taking medication and not taking it correctly is what we need to focus on - with your brother it happened to be a narcotic, a strong natcotic at that, that took his life, but there is a place for this medication - that place is in a clinic setting with Dr.'s monitoring it and prescribing it to those that should be taking it. I don't know why, how, when your brother took his lethal dose, but don't let him die in vain - get to the root of the problem, not the symptoms - WHY DID HE TAKE IT? That is what needs to be addressed and once that question is answered, then you can focus on others who want to take drugs for similiar reasons, whether it is to "forget pain" or to "get through a tough time" or simply to "catch a buzz" - - once we get to the root of WHY kids are medicating themselves, we will all be better off.
Thanks and again, I am so sorry for your loss......

Hi Nancy - Yes, Matthew died in the hallway of our home. Where his head was slumped forward, brownish pulmonary edema fluid drained from his mouth and left a stain on the carpet. It was 6 months before I cleaned the stain up. It was like a grave marker in our home, the very point where he died. And we have to go past that point many times, every day. I was by myself when I discovered Matthew's body (I am divorced). I thought I stayed pretty calm when I called 911, but then I called my mother next and she asked who it was, so I must have been more hysterical than I thought. This dreadful scene plays over and over in my mind. I tried posting on some of the pro-methadone websites too, but they deleted them and banished me! My posts were not angry nor did I say that I thought all of the clinics should be shut down. I just suggested that patients should be more educated before they started this method of treatment, so they can make an educated decision. They need to see the positives and the risks/negatives. We were only presented the positive side of Methadone, even in the websites that I read, so never in my worst nightmare did I think this drug was so easily fatal. Of course, now that it is too late, I have learned so much about this unstable, lethal drug. It's frustating trying to make changes and simultaneously coping with the pain of losing our sons. Our legal case goes to mediation on June 10, we'll see what happens with that part of the legalities. Love and prayers to you Nancy, Terri

y 2006, the situation had become so severe the Food and Drug Administration issued a public health warning about methadone. Here’s what it said:
Patients should take methadone exactly as prescribed. Bigger doses can slow or stop breathing and can be fatal.
Patients taking methadone should not start or stop taking other medications or dietary supplements without talking to their health care provider. Taking other medicines or dietary supplements may reduce pain relief. They may also cause a toxic build-up of methadone.
Trouble signs: difficulty breathing, extreme fatigue or sleepiness, blurred vision, inability to think, talk or walk normally, feeling faint, dizzy or confused. If these signs occur, patients should get immediate medical help.
Many people think that because methadone is prescribed by a doctor, it’s safe. The statistics tell us something else. Whether you’re taking methadone as treatment for heroin addiction or for pain – which is what the majority of prescriptions are for these days – and even if you don’t think you have a methadone addiction, you might want to consider other options. Methadone detox in a facility capable of handling prescription drug addiction is the place to start. Technorati Tags: methadone detox, methadone addiction, prescription drug addiction

Last night Heather joined an interview with a radio station in Tampa, FL. You could hear her passion and grief as she spoke of losing you to this drug called Methadone. JP you will never be forgotten, in fact many people will learn who you were as your wonderful sister fights to save others from an untimely passing. I am sure as you are watching over her and other families members you carry a smile showing how proud you are of all her efforts, i know I am. First I want to say I am so very sorry for your loss and sorrow. I want to also make sure you understand I mean no disrespect in posting here. I thought long & hard and prayed about posting before I did. I'm posting this because I want there to be a answer to the problem of PRESCRIPTION DRUG abuse. I too lost someone I cared about to a drug overdose,( and yes methadone was involved) So I personally no your pain. I have been on both sides of this . First thing that needs to be done is to find out how all these illegal pills are getting into the hands of people that do not even have pain issues. How are these meds being prescribed to people that apparently do not even need them. If they did they would not be selling them. It seems that people that do have pain must fight to have their pain controlled, and then you have people that are getting RX`s of pain meds and selling them. If the facts are looked at closely and objectively like I have you will see that the majority of methadone that is diverted is not coming from the Methadone Maintenance Treatment Centers but it been prescribed by pain clinics. Every medication is dangerous if it lands in the wrong hands. But what is equally dangerous is if we do not have the facts straight from where the drugs is coming from.

In blind trials, users who were given both drugs orally were unable to distinguish between the effects heroin and methadone. Withdrawal from heroin should be over after seven to ten days. Withdrawal from methadone though, can take up to a month or even longer. Many former heroin users have claimed that the horrors of heroin withdrawal were far less painful and difficult than withdrawal from methadone. Methadone is a synthetic drug. It was first invented in Germany during the Second World War by scientists who, having discovered pethidine some years earlier, were developing other similar compounds. The effects of methadone last longer than those of morphine-based drugs. Methadone's effects can last up to 24 hours. Deaths occur more frequently at the beginning of treatment in methadone programs; they are usually a cause of excessive doses (i.e. erroneously estimated tolerance). Methadone generally entails the entire spectrum of opioid side effects, including the development of tolerance and physical and psychological dependence. Individuals are as physically dependent on methadone as they were to heroin or other opiates, such as Oxycotin or Vicodin. The most common side effects of Methadone are: drowsiness; lightheadedness, weakness, euphoria, dry mouth, urinary retention, constipation, and slow or troubled breathing. Ironically, methadone used to control narcotic addiction is frequently encountered on the illicit market and has been associated with a number of overdose deaths. Methadone comes as tablets, dispersible tablets, liquid, and liquid concentrate. Methadone is one of the most difficult drugs to detox from since its effects are long-lasting and it is readily stored in the body's tissue. 10.9 pepole die every day from methadone 2 out of Hundred pepole Prescribed methadone die.
